Northcutt Named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Team for Record Third Time

Full Team List

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Senior Mary Northcutt (Huntsville, Ala.) of the Carson-Newman swim team has been named to the 2019-20 CoSIDA Academic All-America at-large first-team for Division II.

"Our women's team typically has always had a strong team GPA," Carson-Newman coach Jordan Taylor said. "Mary is a hard-working, focused academic so for her to have come into an environment where that type of behavior is the norm, it isn't a surprise to me that she thrived."

Northcutt joins fellow swim senior Paden Duke (Memphis, Tenn.) as the only athletes in Carson-Newman history to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America teams three times.

Nationwide, Northcutt and Duke are two of just six total student-athletes to earn the recognition for the third time in their respective careers.

It is the first time in Northcutt's career that she has been named to the Academic All-America first-team after being named to the third-team in 2018 and 2019.

Northcutt, an exercise science major, finished her undergraduate courses with a 4.00 GPA. She will further her education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she plans to pursue her doctorate in physical therapy.

"She truly encompasses everything C-N values as far as work ethic, commitment and leadership," Taylor said. "She was everything you could want in a student-athlete. She was a hard-working and polite leader that set an example for the rest of the team."

Northcutt and Duke's laurels build this year's Academic All-American list to eight C-N athletes for the 2019-2020 season, a new school record.

The Eagles have seen 48 total athletes named Academic All-Americans by CoSIDA, including 33 in the last six years alone.

Nationwide, 16 men and 16 women are repeat performers on this year's at-large teams. Thirty-four athletes on the teams, 20 women and 14 men, finished with a 4.00 GPA.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America Division II women's team had an overall GPA of 3.94.
