C-N Swim Named a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman swim team has been named a 2019-20 CSCAA Scholar All-America team.

The women had an average GPA of 3.79, the highest in program history. The men finished with a 3.68 GPA, amongst the highest ever recorded by the men.

"Our athletes are competitive, so they want to compete, and they want to win," Carson-Newman coach Jordan Taylor said. "I just encourage them to bring that competitiveness into the classroom. I think when I took over four years ago, we were in that 3.1 or 3.2 area. We were doing okay but I knew such hard-working swimmers could do better. As our upperclassmen continue to perform so well in the classroom, our freshman and sophomores see that and are motivated to meet that standard as well."

Ten female swimmers finished with a 4.0 GPA and 16 finished with a GPA above 3.50. Eight male swimmers completed their seasons with 4.0 GPAs and 18 had a GPA above 3.50.

"No team was unaffected by this spring's pandemic but Athletic Director Pope and Provost Buckner can and should be proud of their team and the work of Jordan [Taylor]," CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart said.

Additional institutional adjustments to grading systems resulted in GPAs nearly one-quarter letter grade higher than previously. As a result, the CSCAA will not be publishing team GPAs.  This Semester's list also does not include teams at institutions that switched entirely to pass/fail grading.

C-N was one of 801 programs from 461 institutions named to the Scholar All-America Team for the Spring 2020 semester. Teams were selected on the basis of their Spring grade point averages and represent 17,982 student-athletes.
