Lady Eagles stroll past Newberry, 9-0, for third straight win

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Newberry College on Monday in South Atlantic Conference action at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.

With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 7-8 on the season and 2-6 in the conference. The victory is C-N's third straight overall and second straight in SAC play.

Senior Taryn Cappadona (Kennesaw, Ga.) and freshman Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) got the Lady Eagles off to a strong start as they claimed an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Stefy Stand (Ecuador) and Devon Jennings (Summertown, Tenn.) picked up an 8-4 victory in No. 2 doubles. Senior Stephanie Goode (Maryville, Tenn.) and sophomore Megan Wilson (Maryville, Tenn.) won by default at No. 3 doubles.

Cappadona, kept the momentum going for the Lady Eagles in singles play as she knocked off Newberry's Marina Ziehe by the scores of 6-4 and 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Stand then defeated Amanda Simmons 6-0 and 6-1 in No. 2 singles action, while Brown clinched the win with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory over Shannon McManus in No. 3 singles.

Goode and Wilson also claimed victories at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively for C-N.

The Lady Eagles return to the court on Wednesday at home against North Georgia. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
