Comeback of the Year
Volleyball at Tusculum: After dropping the first set 25-13 and falling behind 2-0 for the match, Carson-Newman battled back to force a fifth set only to fall behind 14-12 before a Julia Wheeler kill, back-to-back attack errors opened the door before Wheeler slammed it shut with a service ace sealed a comeback win. It is the only time in 15 tries that the Eagles have overcome a 2-0 deficit in a match under coach Ashley Tiernan.
MSOC vs West Alabama: Trailing 1-0 in the final 15 minutes and playing down a man, the resilient Eagles battled back for a 2-1 victory against West Alabama in the season opener. UWA committed a foul inside the box, resulting in a red card, and it granted the Eagles a penalty kick. Senior Jannik Schulte stepped up and drilled the PK into the bottom left corner of goal to tie the match at 1 in the 77th minute. Six minutes later, senior Willem Kruijk made a fabulous run up the left side and sent a shot into the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead. C-N held strong defensively in the final seven minutes to begin the season 1-0.
Football v. Newberry: Carson-Newman turned in a defensive performance for the ages, limiting the Wolves to 17 yards of offense after halftime en route to collecting a win over a top-10 team and the 650th victory in program history. The Eagles scored the final 24 points in the contest to take a 24-14 decision from the Wolves. Newberry led 14-0 in the second quarter after returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown. Carson-Newman would rattle off 24 unanswered to score their first win when trailing by two touchdowns since 2014. C-N trailed 28-7 with two minutes left in the second quarter to North Greenville on Homecoming before coming back to win 35-34. The comeback effort is the Eagles' ninth win when trailing by double-digits since the year 2000, but just its third when facing a two-TD deficit.
Women's Basketball at Aiken: In a game where the Lady Eagles trailed by as many as 10 and by six at halftime, C-N scored the first 14 points of the second half and and outscored the Pacers by 24 points in the final 20 minutes to secure an 18-point triumph. Campbell Penland led all players with a career-high 21 points going 6-for-10 from the field draining five three-pointers adding nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. She led a group of four double-digit scorers in the game.
