UPSET OF THE YEAR

Football v. #23 Wingate: Carson-Newman and its triple option attack only rushed for 47 yards against No. 23 Wingate's vaunted defensive line.  However, C-N found creative ways to score, took advantage of Wingate miscues and only committed one penalty after halftime to scoot away from Burke-Tarr Stadium Saturday afternoon with a 31-28 overtime win and its first 3-0 start in 11 years. The loss was Wingate's only regular season defeat.

Men's Basketball v. #22 Fort Lewis: Carson-Newman's four preseason all-conference players were tremendous in a 94-75 rout of #22 Fort Lewis to close out the final day of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. Nick Brenegan, Jack Browder, Trey Hubbard and John Zhao combined to score 86 of Carson-Newman's 94 points. C-N shot 61 percent from the field en route to its fourth all-time double-digit win over a ranked team.

Volleyball v. Lenoir-Rhyne: Carson-Newman shocked the conference and broke out the brooms against [RV] Lenoir-Rhyne inside Holt Fieldhouse. Carson-Newman  won its sixth straight home match to open the season, sweeping Lenoir-Rhyne in the latest edition. Before Friday evening's match, the Bears had only lost one match, but Carson-Newman was able to protect its home floor en route to an upset that left L-R's bench and traveling fans stunned. Carson-Newman wailed away, hitting .288 while holding the Bears to a .164 attack percentage.

Men's Soccer v. RV West Ala: Tim Haans and Antoine Torrent  scored their first career goals, while Paul Moser recorded a career-high six saves to help Carson-Newman to a 2-0 victory over a West Alabama team sitting just outside the top 25.  After getting outshot 11-4 in the opening half, C-N responded by recording 16 second-half shots compared to UWA's seven. C-N outshot West Alabama 20-18, season-highs in shots for both teams.

Women's Swimming v. #7 Wingate: Carson-Newman took down seventh-ranked Wingate 162-152 in its final meet of 2024. The Eagles were down by three points going into the 400-yard free relay.  Olivia Muir, Emma Bowling, Megan Corcoran and Ivanova Martina took first in the event to help flip the score in C-N's favor and give the women their first duel meet win over the Bulldogs.

Men's Basketball v. #7 North Georgia: Carson-Newman  broke out of a two-game losing streak in a massive way, thumping No. 9/7 North Georgia 89-68. The 21-point win is Carson-Newman's largest margin of victory over a nationally-ranked foe. It bests the 19-point win the Eagles had over No. 22 Fort Lewis in the second game of the season.  The triumph also goes down as head coach Chuck Benson's seventh all-time win over a top-10 team.
