Lynchburg, Salem, Va. – Freshman Christian Shouse (Jacksboro, Tenn.) won a trio of events in Friday's portion of the men's heptathlon to lead Carson-Newman at the Liberty Kickoff during the first of two days of indoor track and field action across the state of Virginia.

Shouse began the first of seven events with a gold in the 60-meter dash, running a time of 7.08 seconds. The one-time SAC Track Athlete of the Week followed it up with a gold in a field event, leaping to a mark of 7.06m in the long jump. Less than a tenth of a meter away from a provisional qualification for the long jump, Shouse's gold in the event bested second place's mark of 6.63m by a full 17 inches.

The freshman finished Friday by earning a 2.06m mark in the high jump, tying teammate Danilo Cardoso (Brazil) for the 15th best measure in all of Division II while also earning a provision qualification for the national championships later this year. At the end of the first day, Shouse has 3,112 points with three events left to go Saturday.

Also competing at Liberty were the pole vault pair of Amy Zadroga (Tolland, Conn.) and Abby Owens (Ocala, Fla.) who earned top-15 finishes with heights of 3.20m and 3.35m, respectively.

At the Finn Pincus Invitational in Salem, senior high jumper Nathalie Schumacher (Germany) earned gold along with distance runner Conal McCambridge (United Kingdom) in the 5000 meters.

With the majority of the team traveling Saturday morning to Salem, a few select athletes got a head start on the rest of the Eagles in racking up the hardware. McCambridge's time of 15:41.23 placed him head and shoulders above the pack with second place finishing nearly 10 seconds later. The time is his best thus far in a C-N uniform in the 5000.

Schumacher's second gold comes in as many events competed in for C-N for the German. Leaping to a mark of 1.65m, her performance Friday comes mere inches short of her 1.68m height at the ETSU Invitational a couple weeks prior.

In the men's portion of the high jump, senior Christian Stumpf (Johnson City, Tenn.) earned sixth with a measurement of 1.88m.

Saturday's slate of action continues with C-N taking to the confines of the Cregger Center in Salem beginning at 10 a.m. Shouse's run at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex will continue at approximately 11:15 a.m. with the pole vault as the fifth of seven events.
