NEW ORLEANS, La. – After Carson-Newman track and field took home a litany of medals the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, 18 Eagles have earned All-Region honors as announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday.
"To have 18 athletes earn All-Region is a blessing," head coach David Needs said. "It speaks well to the high level excellence of our athletes and the quality of our staff. We have a few who distingushed themselves in multiple events which shows their athleticism and impact.
"I also like that we have our All-Region selections over several different events including the women's DMR for the first time."
C-N tripled its number of honorees from the 2019 indoor season and continues to move up in the Southeast region rankings with the men ranked third and women eighth after the conference championships.
Devon Moore (Baxley, Ga.) highlights the Eagles for the men. After winning gold twice in Winston Salem at the SAC meet, Moore also earned All-Region honors in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. It is the second year in a row that Moore has earned two All-Region selections in both the 60 and 200.
Freshman Christian Shouse (Jacksboro, Tenn.) earned four nominations to the All-Region list after he won three conference championships in the pole vault, high jump and long jump. Shouse also picked up an honor in the men's heptathlon, which he currently holds a national championship provisional for later this month.
On the women's side, conference champion Abby Owens (Ocala, Fla.) picked up an All-Region selection after winning gold in pole vault just a few days ago at the conference meet. Bronze medalists Nathalie Schumacher (Germany) and Rachel Strayer (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also picked up All-Region nominations in the high jump and 5000 meters, respectively.
Strayer, as well as Klara Naude (South Africa), Faith Nelms (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Holly Talbut-Smith (Crawley, England) earned All-Region as members of the distance medley relay team that finished fourth against Division I competition at the VMI Indoor Classic in February.
A total of 1,614 athletes from 156 different institutions earned All-Region honors nationwide with 812 honorees coming from the men's side and an additional 802 from women's teams.
To earn All-Region honors, an athlete must be one of the top-5 individuals in their events in their respective region.
