Eagles Begin Outdoor Schedule at Lee Invitational

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Track and Field began its outdoor slate with a bevy of strong results at the Lee Invitational.

Coming off an All-American performance at Nationals, Sade De Sousa won her first 100m heat of the outdoor season with a 12.01. Not only did De Sousa take home the top spot in the 100m, but she did so in the 200m as well with a 25.16.

Colten Lee set a new school record in the Men's 1500m, placing fifth in the event with a time of 3:53.81, he breaks the record for the first time in 46 years breaking the previously held top time of 3:55.40 held by Marty Bryan in 1979, under the direction of head coach Frank Gioscia. 

In field events, Oluwatimi Williams set a high bar winning the first discus throw of the season with a distance of 48.24m.

It was the trio of female long jumpers putting on a show for Carson-Newman in the Women's Long Jump as Syndey McCarty set a new Lee Invitational Record to win the event with a distance of 5.88m. Brooke Taylor and Brooke Visser placed third and fifth, respectively, in the event.

In the Men's 100m, Quacy Virgo set a new personal record (PR) to place second in the event with a 10.69. The Eagles dominated the event overall with Dawson Jones placing fifth, Amine Kasmi placing seventh, Jeremiah Carroll placing eighth, and Rocko Jennings placing 15th.

Kasmi began a trend of top-five finishers in the Men's 200m as Eagles took spots two through five. Kasmi placed second, Rylan Jordan in third, Favour Ekpekpe in fourth, and Dawson Jones in fifth. The only athlete to beat the four flying Eagles was Mustapha Bokpin of Cumberland (Tenn.).

Jeremiah Carroll set a new PR in the Men's 110m Hurdles with a 14.72 to place third while Shemar Patten came in eighth in the event as well.

Trishanie Warner earned a podium finish in the Women's 400m finishing in 57.79, which was enough for second place.

In the Women's 1500m, Jenna Pittman set a new PR with a time of 4:51.32, she placed 11th. She also set a PR in the Women's 5000m with an 18:09.74 to place seventh.

In other field events, Kendall Whitehead finished fourth in the Women's High Jump clearing a height of 1.50m, and second in the Women's Triple Jump with a distance of 11.16m. Keaton Gramann placed sixth in the Men's Long Jump with a distance of 6.16m.

Williams grabbed another podium finish setting a new PR and school record in the Men's Shot Put with a distance of 16.41m, he breaks the record set by Cedrick Killings in 1997 of 15.85m under the direction of head coach David Needs. 

Lizzy Hall had a sixth place finish in the Women's Shot Put with a distance of 10.90m to set a new PR for herself.

Finally, Carson-Newman's "A" and "B" teams finished first and third, respectively with the team of Dawson Jones, Rylan Jordan, Amine Kasmi, and Favour Ekpekpe taking the top spot in 40.93 seconds.
