C-N Track and Field Soars on Day One of SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Carson-Newman Track and Field had a stellar outing on day one of the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Sydney McCarty (Sevierville, Tenn.) won gold in the Women's Long Jump with a distance of 5.84m, the 28th best in Division II this season. The Eagles' Brooke Taylor (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Brooke Visser claimed fifth and eighth in the event.

Andre Morrison (Spanish Town, Jamaica) earned the top qualifying spot in the Men's 60m winning in a photo finish over Catawba's Winfred Porter by four-thousandths of a second at 6.696. Morrison ran the fastest 60m time in SAC Indoor Championships history, with the final still to run tomorrow.

Sade De Sousa (Namibia) qualified for the Women's 60m placing third in the preliminaries with a 7.60.

Both Shemar Patten (Portmore, Jamaica) and Jeremiah Carroll (Atlanta, Ga.) qualified for the Men's 60m Hurdles final in first and fifth place in qualifying with times of 8.11 and 8.40. Patten breaks the Carson-Newman school record for

Amine Kasmi (Brussels, Belgium) and Favour Ekpekpe (Nigeria) qualified first and second in the Men's 200m with times of 21.73 and 21.95.

Rylan Jordan (Johnson City, Tenn.) earned the top qualifying spot in the Men's 400m with a 49.34.

Tytiana Wilson (St. Petersburg, Fla.) qualified in second position in the Women's 400m clocking in with 57.40.

Colton Lee (Knoxville, Tenn.) continued to shine as the Eagles' distance specialist qualifying third in the Men's Mile with a 4:17.55. Lee breaks his own school record in the mile by nearly two seconds.

Verrol Sam earned bronze in the Men's Long Jump with a distance of 7.05m.  

At the end of four of 17 scored events on the men's side, Carson-Newman places eighth with six points, all from Sam's bronze finish in the long jump. Wingate, Anderson, and Emory & Henry lead the conference with 48, 28, and 19 points, respectively.

On the women's side, after six of 17 scored events, Carson-Newman ranks seventh with 18 points. Wingate, Anderson, and Lenoir-Rhyne lead the conference with 44, 38, and 37 points respectively.

Both teams are expected to rack up the points in multiple event finals on day two on Saturday from the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
