Patten, McCarty Shine at Day One of Virginia Tech Challenge

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Carson-Newman earned a couple of favorable results at day one of the Virginia Tech Challenge.

Shemar Patten (Portmore, Jamaica) qualified for the 60m hurdles final with the third-best qualifying time of 8.23 taking down every athlete from the host institution Virginia Tech.

Patten kicked it into another gear for the 60m hurdles final in the evening, smashing his personal record by .04 to place second in the event with a time of 8.04 sandwiched between two Virginia athletes, Peter Djan and Jeremiah Wilson.

The time also came close to a new Carson-Newman program set in 2023 by Matthew Blackmon, missing out by three-thousandths of a second.

Sydney McCarty (Sevierville, Tenn.) picked up the torch in the women's long jump, winning the event with a distance of 5.77m taking down a host of Division I jumpers, primarily from North Carolina State.

Saturday will feature two Eagle runners in the men's 200m in Favour Ekpekpe and Amine Kasmi (Brussels, Belgium).

The duo will be the only Eagles to compete on day two of the Virginia Tech Challenge in an abbreviated meet before the SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. next weekend.
