BLACKSBURG, Va. – Carson-Newman took its talents to Blacksburg and returned with some hardware.

Sydney McCarty (Sevierville, Tenn.) won the women's long jump at the Virginia Tech Challenge toppling a myriad of Division I competitors with a distance of 5.77m, just beating out a distance of 5.75m from NC State's Elyssia Fisher.

Shemar Patten (Portmore, Jamaica) took second place in the men's 60m hurdles with a personal record of 8.04. His placement sandwiched him on the podium between two athletes from the University of Virginia.

In an abbreviated meet where only four athletes ran, Favour Ekpekpe pulled into a second-place finish in the men's 200m on Saturday with a 21.93 just missing out on first place due to a personal record from North Carolina's Donovan Calhoun.

Amine Kasmi (Brussels, Belgium) also started the 200m event but was disqualified due to stepping on or over his lane line more than two times.

Perhaps the most important news of the day from the Track and Field team came over 400 miles away in Sewanee, Tenn. at the Sewanee Invitational where Carson-Newman's Ian Salyer (Knoxville, Tenn.) was competing in the weight throw independently.

Salyer broke his own school record from earlier this season with a 14.61m, enough for third in the meet.

Carson-Newman Track and Field finishes its regular season indoor schedule and will next appear at the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. on March 1 and 2 at the JDL Fast Track.
