Doubles struggles cost Eagles in loss to King, 6-3

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman lost all three doubles points and couldn't climb out of an early hole in a 6-3 loss to visiting King on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles fall to 2-2 on the year.

At No. 1 doubles, junior Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) and freshman Warren McClure (Marietta, Ga.) battled back from 3-0 deficit to even the match before falling, 8-5. After leading most of the way at No. 2 doubles, senior Dusty Davis (Morristown, Tenn.) and junior Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) were broken in the eleventh game to go down 6-5 and never recovered. 

The Eagles lost in similar fashion at No. 3 doubles as freshmen Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Eric Mueller (Collierville, Tenn.) were broken in the twelfth game to go down 7-5 and were unable to recover.   

In singles, the Eagles split the six matches. Singles winners for the Eagles were Paul Birdsong at No. 4, Eric Mueller at No. 5, and Garret Duron (freshman, Woodstock, GA) at No. 6.

C-N will travel to Anderson (S.C.) on Friday afternoon for its 2012 South Atlantic Conference opener.
