
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and split the singles matches to beat Brevard in their South Atlantic Conference, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at the C-N Tennis Complex.
With the win, the Eagles move to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in SAC play.
C-N showed depth in the win, picking up three one-sided wins in singles and pulling off an 8-1 route in No. 3 doubles.
Juniors Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga,) each won two points on the day.
Birdsong won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, while Holdway won 6-2, 6-2 at his No. 3 singles spot. Both won in doubles, as Birdsong joined forces with freshman Warren McClure to grit out an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, which ended up being the deciding match.
Holdway and freshman Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) rolled at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
Freshman Garret Duron clinched the match with a shutout at No. 6 singles.
McClure lost 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Eric Mueller dropped a three-set affair at No. 5 singles, dropping the final set, 6-2.
The Eagles host Covenant College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Mossy Creek.
