Full Results of 2017 NSU Shark Invitational
Fort Lauderdale, FL – The Carson-Newman women's swim team finished second overall behind winner Nova Southeastern after the second and final day of the 2017 NSU Shark Invitational. Day two held two sessions, one at 9:30 a.m. with the final timed session at 2:00 p.m.
The team competed in 12 total events on the day, including winning three of the four relay events throughout the invitational.
"Our target for day two was to excel at the relay and we did just that," Coach Jordan Taylor explained. "Looking to win a few more events and really show up strong in the second session in the relays."
The team recorded a win in the 200-yard medley relay to kick off the 9:30 a.m. session. The team of Margaret Stansberry, Maggie Melhorn, Elly Culp and Lisa Postma finished in a time of 3:50.58, which is currently the best time in the nation so far in 2017.
C-N also turned in a first-place performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.41, which is also a current best in all of Division II. The group of Lisa Postma, Maggie Melhorn, Mary Northcutt and Margaret Stansberry collected two first-place finishes as a group on the weekend. The team earned wins in three of the four relay events.
Margaret Stansberry earned her first individual first-place finish of the invitational, recording the top time in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time of 1:51.32 was over two seconds faster than the runner-up, also collecting the 3rd fastest time in the country in the event. Melhorn finished with the third fastest time in the event at 1:54.57.
Maggie Melhorn had another strong day, grabbing second-place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.45, but collected a win in the 200-yard breaststroke with the fastest time in the country at 2:19.09.
CJ Jensen, a freshman from Copenhagen, Denmark, collected the fourth-best time in the country in the women's 200-yard butterfly after finishing the third best time on the day in 2:09.12
Melhorn, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, was awarded a trophy for the female with the highest point total over the two-day period at the Invitational.
"Super proud of Maggie and what she did against some of the top competition in the nation," Taylor exclaimed. "I'm really pleased with everything we did over the weekend, even if we came in second as a team to NSU."
The Eagles collected 620 points to the Sharks 780. C-N finished 150 points ahead of third-place University of Indianapolis.
