COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Carson-Newman's men's and women's swim programs have placed a total of nine student athletes on the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America team.
Seven members of the women's swim program made the squad, while two men's swimmers were listed. All but one of the Eagles' selections were on the first team. The award recognizes students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and competed at their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Honorable mention status is conveyed to those swimmer's who earned "B" qualifying times to nationals, but did not compete.
On the women's side, Elly Culp, Meredith Ginn, CJ Jensen, Mary Northcutt, Lisa Postma and Laurel Sankowski. Gabby Aguiar earned honorable mention status.
On the men's side, Jon Lancaster and Marcelo Figueiredo were recognized.
The CSCAA recognized a whopping 1,221 swimmers and divers, only 38 of whom carried a 4.0 GPA for the course of their academic careers. Carson-Newman's Mary Northcutt is one of those 38. All seven of the women's swimmer recognized carried at least a 3.69 GPA.
Sankowski, Northcutt, Culp and Postmas were all a part of Carson-Newman's All-America 200 free relay team. Jensen and Ginn joined Postma and Culp to earn honorable mention All-America honors in the 800 free relay.
Figueiredo earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 1000 free and as a member of the 800 free relay, he was teamed with Lancaster in that event.
Figueiredo and Lancaster both earned the Scholar All-America honor for a third consecutive year.
Meanwhile, the women's team matched their record for honorees with seven, set last season. Culp, Jensen, Northcutt, Postma and Sankowski all repeated.
