JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (17-5) has added a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Bluefield State College (0-9) in West Virginia. The meeting replaces a Monday doubleheader with Bellarmine that was cancelled.
Carson-Newman is coming off a four-game win streak that includes sweeps over the Mountain State-based Concord Mountain Lions and Georgia Regents University Augusta.
This is the ninth all-time meeting between the Eagles and Bluefield State. The Eagles are 8-0 lifetime against the Blues with six run-rule victories.
Bluefield States' pitching staff has a team ERA above 8.5 and opposing hitters have pounded out 50 base knocks in 29 innings on starter Amanda Cokely.
The Eagles make the trip back across East Tennessee on I-81 Wednesday to face off against King.
The Tornado is bolstered by a pitching staff featuring Hannah Light – third among active players for complete games with 71 in her career.. Light boasts a 2.45 ERA and an 11-9 record. She's struck out better than a batter an inning and is giving up a .156 batting average against. Her 142 Ks are second in the nation.
Chrissy Melcher leads the Tornado offensively with a .500 average and a team high 16 RBI. Melcher produced three RBI in the extra innings game last season versus the Eagles, all of which came on a three-run blast in the top of the seventh to tie the game for the Tornado.
King is hitting .241 as a team; meanwhile, the Eagles only have two players among their regulars batting below .300.
First pitch for the Eagles' game with the Blues Tuesday is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday's tilts with the Tornado hit at 2 p.m.
