Top offenses collide when Anderson comes to Mossy Creek

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The first and second best offenses in the South Atlantic Conference will meet at the Vickee Kazee-Hollifield Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon at 2 when Carson-Newman (28-12, 7-7 SAC) and Anderson (31-9, 9-5 SAC) get together.

The Trojans have scored a league best 284 runs.  C-N follows suit in second for the category with 251.  The teams are one and two in the league in batting average, hits, doubles, RBI and slugging.  Anderson has clocked out a league high 58 home runs.

Sisters Abby and Molly Child have been beastly in that category.  Each has drilled 11 dingers.

"They're having a tremendous year," Carson-Newman head softball coach Vickee Kazee-Hollifield said of the sisters.  "You have to be so very careful pitching to both of them.  From a team perspective, they have a ton of hitting and they've strengthened their bullpen.  It'll take well-rounded play from us to beat them."

Carson-Newman owns the all-time series with the Trojans 30-5, but Anderson has had the hot hand of late, winning three consecutive.

That includes a doubleheader sweep from the Eagles a year ago that saw Abby Child belt a walk-off home run to complete the sweep.  Carson-Newman left 20 baserunners stranded in last year's doubleheader.

"They're much like a lot of other teams in our league, they've made strides well of late." Kazee-Hollifield said. "There's not one team in our conference where you can have an off day and that's exciting."

Carson-Newman is 4-4 over its last eight contests in games where the Eagles' bats haven't been their usual selves. C-N has eight players hitting better than .300 for the year; however, only Kelli Hensley (Knoxville, Tenn.), Hayley Burnette (Rossville, Ga.) and Sara Kelley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) are on the plus side of .300 over the Eagles' past three series.

"We need to get exceptional play from our seniors," Kazee-Hollifield said. "I'm pretty pleased with where we are defensively.  But our seniors need to pick things up team wide.  They have to lead our attack."

C-N senior shortstop Brittany Hefner (Talbott, Tenn.) is hitting .278 over the last six games while senior first baseman Caitlyn Lance (East Ridge, Tenn.) is hitting for a .267 clip.

First pitch between the Eagles and Trojans is slated for 2 p.m. with a free HD stream available at cneagles.com/live courtesy the Eagle Sports Network.
