C-N continues conference play at Mossy Creek Wednesday with Brevard

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (20-6, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference) will try to get above .500 in SAC play when Brevard (11-15, 0-2 SAC) comes to The Vick Wednesday.

The Eagles are coming off a conference split with Coker with a 6-4 losing effort and a 4-0 shutout victory.  Meanwhile, Brevard enters after getting swept by Newberry Saturday.

The Tornados are led by starting pitcher Jamie Hrobak.  The junior is second in the league with 108 strikeouts while walking the third fewest batters in the league for her innings pitched.

Last season she fanned nine Eagles in an extra innings loss for the Tornados.

"She keeps batters off balance," Carson-Newman head coach Vickee Kazee-Hollifield said. "She makes you hit the pitch that she wants to throw.  This is a team (Brevard) that won't quit; it's a championship type game for us."

Brevard does own a victory over a Columbus State club that defeated C-N earlier this season.  The Cougars have spent time in the NFCA top 25 this season.

In all six of Carson-Newman's losses, the Eagles have left the tying run in scoring position in either the sixth or seventh inning.  Kazee-Hollield said that's a trend the Eagles must correct post haste.

"We have to do a better job of knocking runners in when we've got them in scoring positions," Kazee-Hollifield said. "Teams that have championships bring those runs in.  I think we should have learned from the Mid-South Classic.  We have every opportunity to win the Coker game, we can't let any others slip through our fingers, especially in conference play."

The Eagles average 7.9 runners left on base per game.

Carson-Newman is led offensively by Kelli Hensley (Knoxville, Tenn.), who leads the league with a .526 average.  Hensley batted .625 for the past week.

Kalyn Davis (Danville, Ky.) has also been effective in the circle in her last three outings.  She's riding a streak of 13 consecutive shutout innings.  She's allowed just one run over her last 20 innings pitched.

The Eagles own the all-time series with BC 18-2.  Both of Brevard's wins have come in 1-0 ballgames.  Carson-Newman has won two consecutive in the series thanks to last year's 8-0, 8-7 doubleheader sweep.

A game time has not yet been set for the series.  But it will be available on the Eagle Sports Network at cneagles.com/live.
