Sprinters head south for UofSC Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Carson-Newman sprinters wrap up the regular season this weekend at the UofSC Invitational at the University of South Carolina on Friday, Feb 18.

Devon Moore, Matthew Blackmon, Siphosethu Boya, and Makanakaishe Charamba will all make the trek to the capital city of the Palmetto State to improve their marks before the South Atlantic Indoor Conference Championships on Feb. 26. The quartet will compete against some of the best Division-I talent from South Carolina, Georgia, College of Charleston, Florida A&M, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Mercer, SC State and The Citadel. The crowded field will also feature SAC foes Tusculum, Lenoir-Rhyne, Limestone and Queens and other Division-II schools from the southeast, including Barton, Benedict, Claflin, Embry-Riddle, Johnson C Smith, Shorter, Southern Wesleyan and Virginia Union.

Blackmon is the lone hurdler traveling to Columbia in the Orange and Blue. In his six career races, the freshman from Florida has broken or reset the school record in the 60 meter hurdles five times, most recently at the 2022 Buccaneer Invitational where he recorded his second career victory in the event. Blackmon's time of 8.20 seconds is a provisional mark and is tied for the 36th fastest mark in all of Divsion-II. Blackmon's lowest finish in the 60 meter hurdles this season was in his first race of his career where he finished third in the prelims.

Boya currently holds the school record in the men's indoor 400 meter run and is just over 0.50 seconds away from a provisional mark in the event. His school record time of 49.07 set at the Tiger Paw Invitational ranks as the 62nd fastest time in the nation. The Lee transfer has finished inside the top-five in every 400-meter run he has competed in this season.

In the 200 meter run, Charamba currently holds a provisional mark in the event. The freshman out of Zimbabwe currently holds the 20th fastest time in all of Division-II after running a time of 21.51 at the ETSU Invitational. That is the only time Charamba has competed in the race, finishing second.

Charamba is one of three Eagles to hold a provisional mark in the 60 meter run. Charamba's time of 6.81 seconds at the ETSU Invitational is the 21st fastest time in Division-II. Charamba has finished no lower than third in the race this season.

Moore continues his strong career in the 60 meter run. The current school record holder in the event holds the 26th fastest time in Division-II with a provisional mark of 6.82 seconds. Moore recorded his first win of the season in the event and the tenth of his career at the Tiger Paw Invite earlier this season. After finishing eighth in the prelims of the event at the ETSU Invitational, Moore has recorded six straight top-three finishes in the event prelims and finals.

The Eagles will get started at 11:00 AM with the prelims of the 60 meter run. Fans can follow along with live stats available here and with updates via twitter at @cn_eagles.
