Twelve Eagles named USTFCCCA All-Region

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Twelve members of the Carson-Newman track & field team earned All-Region honors in a total of eleven different events for the 2022 outdoor season.

The men's 4x100 meter relay team of PJ Lotharp, Siphosethu Boya, Makanakaishe Charamba, and Devon Moore earned honors while Charamba, Boya and Moore were named All-Region for the 100-meter run. Chramba also earned honors in the 200-meter run. Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche, Joseph Oreva, Shane Connell, and Matthew Blackmon round out the honors for the men's team. On the women's side, Sydney McCarty, Nathalie Schumacher, Tytiana Wilson and Abby Owens earned All-Region accolades. 

The top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay team.

Only USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.

The men's 4x100 meter relay team broke or reset the school record in the event six times in a row to end the season. The group took home the bronze medal at the NCAA Division-II Outdoor Championships, finishing third with a time of 39.63 seconds. The group earned All-American honors, becoming the first relay group in school history to earn All-American honors.

Charamba earned two individual honors in the 100 and 200-meter runs. The Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year, Charamba scored 13.5 points at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships thanks to a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 meters and 200 meters, as well as a carry on the third-place 4×100 relay. That was the most points by an athlete from the Southeast Region at the NCAA Championships.

Charamba was named the SAC Male Track Athlete of the Year after sweeping the short sprints and helping on the winning 4×100 at the conference meet. He also earned the SAC Freshman of the Year title at conference. He is a member of the school record holding men's 4x100 meter relay team and holds the school record in the 200-meter run, running a time of 20.41 seconds at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Boya closed out his season with a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter run at the NCAA Division-II Outdoor Championships with a time of 10.56 seconds. His time of 10.30 seconds set at the Outdoor Music City Challenge tied Moore for the school record and was tied for the 12th-fastest time in Division-II. Boya took home the silver medal at the 2022 SAC Outdoor Championships.

Oreva earns All-Region honors in the long jump for the outdoor season for the second straight season. The sophomore held the second farthest mark in all of Division-II, recording a mark of 7.77 meters at the LSU Joe May Invitational. Oreva finished third at the event, finishing above several Division-I athletes. The Port Harcourt, Nigeria native also won the SAC Championship in the event for the second straight season with a mark of 7.50 meters. 

At the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, Oreva finished fourth in the long jump, earning his third All-American honors of his career and his first career outdoor honors. 

Jureidini-Wyche earns All-Region honors in discus for the second straight year. Jureidini-Wyche earned second team All-American honors in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The senior competed in the second flight, recording a toss of 49.66 meters in the opener before slinging the disc 51.19 meters, his furthest throw of the afternoon. With a ninth-place finish, the mark was good enough for second-team All-American honors, the first of Jureidini-Wyche's career and the first thrower in Carson-Newman history to earn All-American honors.

Shane Connell earned Outdoor All-Region honors in the high jump for the second straight season. Connell won five straight high jump championships in the outdoor season, winning the high jump with a clearance of 2.00 meters. The Manchester, England native needed just one jump to clear the two meter mark, a feat he did four times this season. 

Matthew Blackmon earns his first career Outdoor All-Region honors, earning the honor in the 110-meter hurdles. Blackmon took home the silver medal at the SAC Outdoor Championships with a new personal best mark of 14.67 seconds. The freshman won three event championships this season, becoming the first Eagle to earn a win in the 110-meter hurdles since the 2017 season. 

Devon Moore earns Outdoor All-Region honors for the third time in his career in the 100-meter run. Coming back from an injury in the indoor season, Moore finished inside the top-10 of the 100-meter at every event he competed in during the outdoor season. He finished third at the Outdoor Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt with a mark of 10.40 seconds.

Abby Owens earned Outdoor All-Region honors for the second straight season in the pole vault. Earlier this week, 

Owens earns her first career Academic All-American honors, dominating off the field as well as on it this season for the Eagles, earning a 4.0 GPA while double majoring in Mathematics and Philosophy. Owens recorded eight top-10 finishes in the pole vault this season, recording event championships at the Lee Invitational and Electric City Invitational.

She ended the indoor season with a second-place finish at the SAC Indoor Championships with a clearance of 3.10 meters. At the SAC Outdoor Championships, Owens won her second straight gold medal with a clearance of 3.45 meters. 

Nathalie Schumacher earns her third career Outdoor All-Region honors in the high jump. The Germany native recorded five top-five finishes in the event including the event championship at the Montreat Invitational. She finished second at the SAC Outdoor Championships in the event with a mark of 1.65 meters.

Sydney McCarty earns her first career Outdoor All-Region honors, earning the laurel in the long jump. The freshman recorded six top-five finishes in the event this outdoor season, including a third-place finish at the SAC Outdoor Championships. McCarty's personal best mark of 5.85 meters set at the Lee Last Chance event is just 0.05 meters away from tying the school record. 

Tytiana Wilson rounds out the award list, earning her first career Outdoor All-Region award in the 400-meter run. The freshman set a new school record in the event and recorded her first career event win at the Montreat College Invitational with a time of 57.98 seconds. Wilson closed the season at the SAC Outdoor Championships resetting the school record in the 400-meter run with a time of 56.49 seconds. 

The Eagles have now had double digit athletes earn All-Region honors in back-to-back seasons. Thirteen Eagles earned laurels from the USTFCCCA after the 2021 outdoor campaign.
