BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - In her first 5K race of the season, Rachel Strayer broke a thirteen-year-old record in the 5,0000 meter run at the Hilltopper Relays on Friday, Apr. 1.
The senior out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. finished third in the event with a time of 17:42.25, beating out runners from Division-I schools Purdue-Fort Wayne, Austin Peay and Marshall.
Strayer's time breaks the old record set in 2009 by Aubrey Morris. She beat Morris' time of 18:25.00 by a whopping 42.05 seconds in the race at Western Kentucky. Strayer's time also beats her former outdoor personal best of 18:45.21 by 1:03.04.
Strayer also holds the record for the 5,000 meter run in indoor track & field, running a time of 17:46.93 at the 2020 VMI Indoor Classic.

Raymond Brugmans also competed at the Hilltopper Relays in the men's 5K, finishing 13th with a time of 15:43.37. It was the Den Bosch, Netherlands native's first time running the event in outdoor track, finishing above runners from Division-I Purdue-Fort Wayne and Marshall.
