BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - The Carson-Newman track & field team looks to build off their success from the Lee Invitational as they head to the Tarheel state for the Montreat Invitational.
The two day event begins Friday, Mar. 25 at Pulliam Stadium at 10:00 AM. Friday will consist of the javelin, hammer throw, long jump and pole vault, with distance events including the 5,000 meter run and 3,000 meter steeplechase will be held on the track. Saturday, Mar. 26 will see the shot put, discus, triple jump and high jump, with sprint events and relays on the track. Saturday's events will also start at 10:00 AM.
A large field of Division-I, Division-II and NAIA teams will compete at Montreat College this weekend. UNC-Asheville and the College of Charleston are the two Division-I teams, with Carson-Newman being joined by SAC rivals Catawba and Tusculum, along with Belmony Abbey, Erskine, Lees-McRae, Livingstone, and King. NAIA stalwarts Columbia College, Milligan, Bob Jones and Point among others.
The Eagles are coming off a very successful start to the 2022 outdoor season at the Lee Invitational, recording three event wins and two NCAA provisional marks while recording 44 top-10 finishes in Cleveland. Matthew Blackmon, Courtavious Garrett, and Abby Owens all recorded event wins in the 110 meter hurdles, long jump and pole vault. The wins were Blackmon's and Garrett's first career evnt wins in those events, while Owens earned her third straight podium placement in the pole vault and her sixth career victory in the event.
Both Makanakaishe Charamba and Trayzel Juredini-Wyche set NCAA provisional marks at the Lee Invitational.
Charamba set a provisional mark in his first ever outdoor 200 meter run at Carson-Newman. The Zimbabwe native finished second overall with a time of 21.11 seconds. Charamba finished second behind professional athlete Devonte Fletcher and beat out the third-place athlete by 0.19 seconds. The mark currently ranks as the third fastest time in all of Division-II for the event.
Juredini-Wyche finished second in the men's discus throw with a toss of 50.62 meters. The Georgia native's throw is an NCAA provisional mark and is currently the eighth longest toss in Division-II. Juredini-Wyche has now recorded eight straight top-five finishes in the event dating back to the 2019 Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational. Juredini-Wyche also finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 45.31 meters.
Carson-Newman has been very successful in Montreat in the past. At last year's event, the men's team won the event championship earning 108 total points. The Eagles beat out Division I programs UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina and Wofford and fellow SAC programs Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne, Lincoln Memorial and Catawba.
Nathalie Schumacher won the high jump title with a clearance of 1.70 meters, a mark that ranked as the highest in all of Division-II at the time.
Last season, the women's 4x100 relay team of Amanda Lowe, Tia Davis, Morgan Bailey and Timaya Ray set a new school record with a time of 47.68 seconds, good enough for a third place finish. Devon Moore continued his dominant 2021 season, winning the 100 meter run with a national qualifying time of 10.51 seconds, beating the second-place runner by 0.15 seconds. Moore also set a provisional mark in the 200 meter run, winning the event with a time of 21.24 seconds.
Juredini-Wyche has been very successful at Montreat, winning the discus event championship at four straight events at Montreat College. At the 2021 Montreat Final, the Georgia native set a new school record in the event with the 15th best toss in Division-II with a toss of 53.09 meters.
