JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Twelve days in. Twelve days out.
Carson-Newman's football teams marked the halfway point of fall camp with the first of two preseason intrasquad scrimmages Saturday morning at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
"I think today was a good day for us," Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Clowney said. "A big thing we were trying to see was were guys going to know where to line up and the type of execution we would have. I think for the most part we were able to execute well. Not really any busts on the defense is one thing you really want to see early on to make sure guys understand where they are and getting lined up. I thought offensively, with things being fairly new, the guys were pretty tuned in. It was a good day of work."
The situational scrimmage featured the first team offense against the second team defense, and second team offense against the first team defense on down the line in a variety of common football circumstances.
After a missed field goal on the opening possession, Tre Lutrell hit Jeremiah Carroll on three straight pass completions to jump start a drive. After back-to-back Vonte Brackett and Tyler Curtis rushes, an incomplete pass forced fourth down and a pure 30-yard Grant Haney field goal attempt.
In redzone work, Lutrell found the end zone on the ground with a seven-yard run, while Curtis and Jayden Sullins also both found the end zone on rushing attempts. Freshman tightend RJ Brooks snared a touchdown pass from Zane Whitson.
"I think the balance, it was fairly competitive," Clowney said. "The offense had a lot of snaps, then the defense was able to get some stops at the end when they needed to. On special teams, from an organizational standpoint, needed to have guys a little sharper on where they need to be. But, overall I think it was good to be able to see where they are, so when we go back in on Monday to work on it."
