JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Orange defense produced four turnovers to highlight Carson-Newman football's situational scrimmage and the annual Orange versus Blue Spring Game Saturday at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
The orange team recovered three fumbles and picked off a pass. The top two moments were a juggling interception in the red zone by Justin Rouse. The INT looked to be for Jackson Ward, but he was stripped being tackled in the end zone. The ball flipped into the air and was secured by Rouse for some sudden change.
Martavis Mason had the other game-breaking turnovers, scooping and scoring a 43-yard fumble recovery.
"I thought our defense had really good energy and was athletic and moved around well," Carson-Newman head football coach Ashley Ingram said. "Offensively, I thought we had some moments, we just can't beat ourselves. Offensively, there was a little bit of a lull in the middle of things. We just have to compete. We've made a lot of progress, but we have a long way to go before we are ready for the fall."
The situational scrimmage saw the first and second team offenses competing against the corresponding defenses in a series of drives starting in both plus and minus territory.
Offensively, Cade Meeks hauled in a 22-yard touchdown catch. James Maddox pounded in a seven-yard touchdown run, while Tedros Gleaton called his own number for a three-yard rushing score.
"Christian Hicks, Major Williams and Fortune Woods have all played well this spring, and in this game," Ingram said. "Offensively, Justin Johnson shows up at quarterback. Jayden Sullins is definitely making plays, then guys you would expect, Cade Meeks and Jeremiah Carroll continue to show up in our receiving corps."
