#18 Eagles finish fifth at Saint Leo Invitational

Final Results

DADE CITY, Fla. – Through the second day of competition, No. 18 Carson-Newman shot seven-over to close out their time at the Saint Leo Invitational with a fifth-place, falling one spot from the conclusion of Monday.

Despite the fall, the Eagles garnered their fourth-straight top-five finish of the 2017-18 season.

Carson-Newman was the top par shooting team for the tournament with 180 holes. Head coach Randy Wylie's team was also tied for the second-best Par 3 shooting team with a 3.15 clip.

"Not our best in the second and third rounds," Wylie said. "Could've been a top-three finish versus some of the best teams in the country. We just weren't sharp enough."

Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) fell three spots on the leaderboard through Tuesday for a tie at 11th, still the highest Eagle on the leaderboard. In the third round, he shot a pair of bogeys and birdies but also shooting a double bogey to shoot a two-over round of 74. He was one-under in the event with a 215 total.

The junior was tied as the top par-shooting golfer in the field, shooting even on 42 total holes.

Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.) was even through the start of the day with a pair of birdies and bogeys before an even showing on the back nine for a round of 72. His third round showing pushed him to a tie for 16th, shaving four strokes off of his second round score. He concluded with a 217 total.

One stroke behind Marcinelli was Tom Forster (Oundle, England) at a tie for 18th. He improved his play by four shots in the third round with a round of 73. He was +2 for the event, moving up two spots from Monday. He was one-under on Par 3 shots, placing him at second in the field for such scoring.

Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) had a third round that completely mirrored his second round, once again shooting four-over for a score of 76. He was 224 through all three rounds, eight-over par at a tie for 32nd. He moved down three spots since the end of the second round.

The freshman tied for third in the field for par shooting, going even on 39 holes.

Alex Hutson (Newport, Tenn.) had the steepest fall of the third round among C-N players. He was +5 through the front nine on Tuesday, the highest he shot on that set of holes in the three rounds of play. The second half of the course saw him shoot a pair of birdies with four bogeys and a double bogey, for a nine-over round of 81, his highest of the tournament.

No. 3 Nova Southeastern maintained its spot at the top of the field with a 19-under total of 845. Lee moved into second on Tuesday at -11 while Saint Leo moved down to third at -5.

Nova Southeastern's Juan Jose Guerra also stayed at the top of the player leaderboard after the third round of completion with a 201 total at 15-under. Four strokes behind him was Lee's Scott Odell at second followed by Lander's Conor Richards with a -10 total of 206.

"Can't wait to get back on the road Friday against playing against three of the top 10 teams in the country," Wylie mentioned.

The Eagles make a quick turnaround back to the Sunshine State to close out their trio of Florida events this weekend for their second-straight appearance in the Panther Invitational. The event hosted by the Florida Institute of Technology will take place from March 5-7 at the Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla.
