Carson-Newman falls 9-0 at Eagle Watch Classic

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — The Eagles (3-10) were shut out for the first time this season as they lost to North Georgia (12-3) 9-0 in the Eagle Watch Classic Wednesday afternoon.

North Georgia, who powers a strong doubles team, put Carson-Newman behind early by taking all three matches to begin the day. The Eagles' duo of Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) were the closest ones to scoring a point all day when they fell in a tiebreaker in the third round of doubles, 9-8(1).

Four of the six Eagle singles players fell to a North Georgia player in only two sets. Stefano Daza (Venezuela) lost 6-2, 6-3 in the second round matchup and Juan Sebastian Perez (Ecuador) fell in a similar fate, 6-3 and 6-2 at No. 3. Mackay was nearly blanked at No.4, losing 6-0, 6-1, while Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) fell 6-1 and 6-3 at No.6.

Leadoff man for the Eagles, Oliveiro, took the opening match into three sets, but untimely fell 0-6, 6-4, 10-8. Freshman Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga.) followed suit at No. 5, taking his match to three sets but losing 4-6, 6-2, and 10-6.

"Good effort given by both men and women," coach Jean Love said. "North Georgia was just too tough today."

Carson-Newman will return to action this weekend in search for their first win in their last seven tries when they face off against South Atlantic Conference foes Lincoln Memorial and Lenior-Rhyne.
