Beach Volleyball heads to Charleston, S.C. for second tourney of the season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman beach volleyball (0-4) concludes their spring break at the College of Charleston Tournament in South Carolina beginning on Saturday.

"We're ready for the weekend," Coach Kody DuBarry said. "We lost a couple of close ones 3-2 last weekend and we're ready to get back out there."

First up for the Eagles early Saturday morning at 8 a.m. will be Florida Southern College. The Mocs are 2-4 so far on the season with both of their wins being against UT Martin earlier this month. The Mocs have seven returning players from last season and seven freshmen making their debut as strictly beach players. Additionally, a couple of transfers were brought in from St. Petersburg College and Webber International.

The second match of the day will be against the defending National Champions, Texas A&M Kingsville. The Javelinas were the first program in their school history to win a National Championship and look to defend their title. Defeating more than six Division I opponents last season, the squad walked away with the National title after defeating Eckerd College at the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Championships in Tavares, FL. The team has gone 20-2 in two seasons on their home courts and are 2-5 so far in the 2019 season. The Javelinas will go head to head with the Eagles at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon

Sunday the Eagles will face the host, College of Charleston, to begin the day at 10:30 a.m. The Cougars are 3-0 on the season after defeating the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Saint Leo, and North Florida and are led by the top duo of senior Kennedy Madison and junior Lauren Freed.

Finishing out the tournament, the Eagles will face Huntingdon College at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The Hawks are 1-7 overall this season with their lone win coming from their match against Nicholls State last weekend.
