Lady Eagles fifth after first day of Newberry College Invitational

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.— The Carson-Newman women's golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Newberry College Invitational on Monday at Moss Creek Golf Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The Lady Eagles shot a 336 (+40) and are 20 strokes behind tournament leader UNC Pembroke, which turned in a first-round 316 (+20). Host Newberry College is in second place after shooting a 325 (+29).

Senior Jessica Tarbert (Corryton, Tenn.) led the way for the Lady Eagles, carding an 82 (+8) to finish the day in a tie for ninth.

Junior Jennifer Oliver (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot an 84 (+10) and is tied for 18th, while Mary Tunnell (Memphis, Tenn.) and Louise McGillivray (Banchory, Scotland) each shot an 85 and are tied for 24th. Erica Ray (Maryville, Tenn.) is tied for 37th after a first-round 88.

UNC Pembroke's Katja Dammann leads the tournament after firing a 3-over par 77.

The final round of the Newberry College Invitational will begin on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
