Tarbet tied for lead, Lady Eagles fifth after first round of 2011 Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C. — The Carson-Newman women's golf team is in fifth place after Monday's first round of the 2011 Pinehurst Challenge at National Golf Club.

The Lady Eagles finished the day with a score of 323 (+35) and are 11 strokes back from tournament leader Newberry College. The Wolves carded a 312 (+24) on the day. No. 22 Saint Leo (Fla.) University is second at 319, followed closely by No. 15 UNC Pembroke at 320. Flagler (Fla.) College is fourth at 321, while host Wingate is 11th with a first day score of 337.

C-N senior Jessica Tarbet (Corryton, Tenn.) is tied atop the leaderboard with Saint Leo senior Jordan Hatch, who both shot two-over par 74s.

Junior Erica Ray (Maryville, Tenn.) is tied for 16th after turning in a round of 80 (+8), while sophomore Melanie Manis (Louisville, Tenn.) finished with a score of 84 (+12) and is tied for 36th. Freshman Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) is tied for 44th with a score of 85 (+13), and freshman Louise McGillivray (Banchory, Scotland) shot an 89 (+17) and is tied for 67th.

The 2011 Pinehurst Challenge at National Golf Club concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start slated for 9 a.m.
