Tunnell tied for 28th after second round of NCAA Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Carson-Newman's Mary Tunnell (Memphis, Tenn.) is tied for 28th place after firing a six-over par 78 in the second round of the NCAA Division II Golf Championships on Thursday in Allendale, Mich.

Tunnell sits in a six-way tie for 28th with 36 holes to play. Tunnell, along with 21 other golfers, are three strokes or fewer out of the top 15.

Tunnell struggled on Thursday's front nine at The Meadows Golf Club, firing a 5-over 40 on the par-35 back nine, but closed with a one-over 38 in her final nine holes to finish Thursday's round strong. She birdied the par-five fourth hole and played the final seven holes at even par to stay in the top half of the tournament field.

Nova Southeastern's Taylor Collins leads the tournament at 7-under. She has a three shot lead over teammate Abby Gittings, who sits at 4-under.

They are the only two golfers in the field under par.

In the team standings, the three teams which finished ahead of the Lady Eagles in last week's NCAA South Regional, Nova Southeastern (-2), Rollins College (+17), and Florida Southern (+22), are the top three teams, respectively.

Tunnell will tee off in the first group at 8:30 a.m. for Friday's third round. The 72-hole event concludes on Saturday.
