Lady Eagles place sixth overall in Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's golf team ended Tuesday's final round at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate with a combined team score of 639 putting them 33 strokes behind tournament champions, Newberry.

Freshman Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) finished day two three strokes better than day one.  Hawkins shot a 77 Tuesday and 157 overall.  Hawkins finished in a tie for 22nd. Mary Tunnell ended the day one stroke behind Hawkins in 27th place.

As a team, Carson-Newman cut five strokes from its score from round one to round two.  Carson-Newman head women's golf coach Mandy Moore said the five stroke improvement from round one to round two was a highlight.

"We definitely improved in the second round, which is always good," Moore said. "I saw a lot of positives that will improve each tournament we play. I am very pleased with this first tournament,"

The Lady Eagles will tee off again, September 29, at the Lander University Lady Bearcat Invitational.
