Eagles head to Georgia to kick-off the 2013 spring season

Carson-Newman's women's golf team hits the road for its first tournament of the 2013 season. The Eagles head to Columbus, Ga. to participate in the Lady Cougar Collegiate Classic, beginning Sunday February 24.

Head coach Amanda Moore said it'll be nice to see her players hit the links for the first time in 2013.

"We are looking forward to getting our spring season started in Columbus this year," Moore said, "It will be a new event for us so it will be a challenge to adjust to a new golf course."

Towards the end of the fall semester and over the holidays, the Eagles experienced some rough weather that threw off their practice times. However, despite the inclement weather, the women's team found ways to practice and get ready for the spring.

"We have taken advantage of our good weather days and been practicing in some tough conditions as well," Moore said. "The team has been working hard in practice and I know they are getting anxious to compete against other teams."

Last fall the Eagles showed promising improvement as well as results.

The Eagles primary leaders were junior Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.), sophomore Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.), and sophomore Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.). Those three players not only drew top honors for many tournaments on the team, but also finished in the top 20 in several of the tournaments last year.

Moore said each member of the women's golf team is expected to not only help lead the team, but contribute in many different ways throughout each tournament this semester.

"The first tournament of the spring is usually a good measure of where we are as a team and we will see quickly what we need to continue to improve upon," Moore said.

The Eagles will tee of Sunday, February 24 in Columbus, Ga.
