Hawkins nest in fourth place at the Wingate Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C.- Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) snagged the fourth spot Tuesday at the Wingate Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C.

Hawkins shot a 74 (+2) for round one before finishing the tournament with a round two, 80 (+8).

This tournament is the first this season that saw Hawkins finish as the top individual performer for C-N.

"Meridith had a great tournament and what I believe will be her first of many top five finishes in her career," Head coach Amanda Moore said.

As a team, the women finished with a combined score of 645, which was 11 strokes behind tournament winner Wingate University. The Eagles finished in front of four other South Atlantic Conference opponents.

"I am proud of the team for their finish this week and I am happy that we are improving each round," Moore said.

Sophomore Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) just missed a top five finish. She ended in a tie for sixth. Baiunco finished round one with a score of 76 (+4) and round with two with an 80 (+8).

"Both Baiunco and Hawkins played good rounds despite the tough conditions during the first round," Moore said.

Junior Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.) finished with scores of 85 (+13) and 81 (+9) which tied her for 27th place.

Sophomore Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.) tied for 38th and junior Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) finished tying in 45th.

"We had a lot of positives this week and I hope that we can build momentum for the rest of the spring," Moore said.

The women's team will play again April 7, at the Agnes McAmis Invitational in Greeneville, Tenn.
