Low Country Invitational debut ahead for Eagles this week

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman gears up for the second of back-to-back weeks of event play by heading back to the Hilton Head Island area for the third-annual Low Country Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Crescent Pointe Golf Club in Bluffton, S.C.

The Eagles are looking to keep the wheels rolling after a second-place finish at the Battle of Hilton Head just five days ago. They closed out the tournament just two shots shy of the lead thanks to a 19-over final round. The 307 on the day was the second-lowest round of any team in the field. Overall, just four shots separated all six of the Eagles in the field.

Carson-Newman coach Suzanne Strudwick will take the same six Eagles back to the Palmetto State this week to make its event debut, led by Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) and Matilda Frövenholt (Öjersjö, Sweden).

Cummins' 12-over performance last week at Hilton Head moved her scoring average on the year to 75.2, still the best among the team this season. She will be making her fourth-straight start in the 2019-20 campaign. Frövenholt matched the second-lowest 36-hole score of her career last week with a 152, placing her as the highest Eagle on the leaderboard in a tie for 13th. This week marks the highest starting position she has seen in her career.

Heading into this week, Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.) holds a scoring average on the season that is just .4 strokes ahead of Jayla Sims (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) and Ellie Haughton (Lincolnshire, England), both of whom are at an even 77.0 clip.

Playing as the individual last week, Olivia Williams (Cleveland, Tenn.) had a strong enough outing that moved her scoring average on the year from 80.8 to 79.6.

No. 10/10 Wingate hosts this week's event that will bring together numerous South Atlantic Conference teams in the Palmetto State. Joining the Eagles and Bulldogs are No. 20/21 Lenoir-Rhyne, Newberry, Queens and Tusculum.

Division I squads Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan are also a part of the 14-team field, along with Grand Valley State who is currently No. 17/18 in the Women's Golf Coaches Association and Golfstat Division II polls, respectively.

Western Michigan returns to the field as the back-to-back team champion at the Crescent Pointe Golf Club, a course designed by Arnold Palmer. The 5,843-yard, 71-par course sits just miles outside of Hilton Head Island.

The 36-hole tournament opens Monday with both days of action starting at 8:30 a.m.
