Eagles toppled in season opener

TAMPA, Fla. – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team fell 5-0 tonight in its first match against Tampa.

 

The Spartans took the lead in the fifth minute of play when Chelsea Martin crossed a ball into Cici Gonzales. Martin scored Tampa's second goal 12 minutes later.

 

Gonzales also put up the Spartans' third and fifth goals both assisted by Amber Pennybaker. Gabby Russo claimed the fourth goal in the 65th minute.

 

C-N's junior Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) released the Eagles' lone shot of the match and landed it on goal.

 

Sophomore keeper Taylor Hammond (Suwanee, Ga.) made nine saves for C-N during the match.

 

The Eagles hit the pitch again Saturday at 5 p.m. at Saint Leo.
