Eagles seek back-to-back conference wins at Queens

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a huge SAC win last Wednesday, the Carson-Newman (3-10, 1-7 SAC) women's soccer team sets off for Charlotte, N.C. tomorrow to continue conference play at Queens (6-7-2, 4-3-2 SAC), last year's SAC champion.

The Lady Eagles toppled Mars Hill 4-1 earlier this week with goals by four different underclassmen. MHU's Rachel Blong opened the scoring in the 28th minute and the Lions held their lead for the remainder of the first half. Four minutes into the second, freshman Camilla Olsson (Norway) tied it up with a one-touch finish. Freshman Helen Seed (England) claimed the assist and then proceeded to score a goal of her own in the 56th off a corner kick taken by sophomore Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.).

"The girls' spirit in warm up," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said, "set them up for success."

Eight minutes later, senior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) set up sophomore Nora Logan (Charlotte, N.C.) with a through pass in behind the Lions' defense for Logan's second goal of the season.

In the final two minutes of regular time, Logan was fouled in the box and C-N was awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Chelsea Jordan (Knoxville, Tenn.) stepped up to the penalty shot and secured the Eagles' fourth point, her first of the season.

Though the underclassmen stole the show on the scoreboard, senior midfielder Bailee Wilson gave a strong performance behind the scenes for a full 90 minutes in the defensive center position. "Bailee," Coach Moodie said, "was the man of the match."

Queens defeated Mars Hill 2-1 on Oct. 18. Blong put MHU up 1-0 on the Royals in the 7th minute. In the 71st minute, Queens' Ashley Osiecki evened the score and, with two minutes remaining, stole the 2-1 victory with an unassisted goal.

"I think we are much better than our results have suggested this season," Coach Moodie said. "This team never gives up. Props to them."

The Royals fell 2-0 to Wingate at home last Wednesday. The Eagles lost 1-0 at Wingate on Sept. 13 when the match was called early due to severe weather conditions.

On last season's senior night, C-N claimed a 1-0 victory over Queens thanks to a penalty kick taken by Danna Stringle (Canada), since graduated, in the 34th minute. C-N outshot the Royals 19 to 12, but both teams landed eight shots on goal.

"The girls need to bring that same level of energy that they had against Mars Hill," Coach Moodie said. "We just have to keep plugging away."

The match is set to kickoff tomorrow at 5 p.m. Watch or follow live stats at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/queensathletics/#.
