C-N suffers devastating loss to the Indians

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (2-4, 0-2 SAC) women's soccer team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker against no. 12 Catawba (6-0, 2-0 SAC) in the final minutes of today's match.

"We're devastated," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "For the first 45 minutes we looked like the no. 12 team in the nation."

The Eagles went into the first half leading Catawba 1-0. Sophomore Nora Logan (Charlotte, N.C.) got on the end of a through ball from Chelsea Jordan (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 39th minute and slotted the ball past the keeper to the far post for her first goal of the season.

"The back four were stellar," Coach Moodie said. "Katy Hill played great. She knows the game very well."

After 45 minutes of action, the Indians had outshot C-N 10 to five, and five to three in shots on goal. Sophomore Katy Hill (Farragut, Tenn.) made five saves in the first half including a breakaway.

"Near the end of the game," graduate assistant coach Sarah Tompkins said, "Catawba just wanted it more."

The Eagles held their lead until the 81st minute of action when Karen Presnell got on the end of a ball near the top of the 18-yard box and chipped Hill who was coming off her line to collect the loose ball.

The Indians stole the lead less than a minute later thanks to freshman Mary Kirkman.

By the end of the match, Catawba had outshot the Eagles 18 to 10 and 11 to six in shots on goal. Hill totaled nine saves.

"We need to take this as a learning experience," Coach Tompkins said, "and build on top of it."

C-N heads to Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start time.
