Lady Eagles fly to Newberry for sixth conference match of 2014

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a hard fought match and two overtime periods yesterday, the Carson-Newman (2-8, 0-5 SAC)  women's soccer team loads up the bus for Newberry (7-1-1, 5-1 SAC) tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Eagles lost 4-3 in yesterday's conference duel against Lincoln Memorial. Senior Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored a header goal of a cross by sophomore Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) to take a 1-0 lead 20 minutes in.

LMU tied it up 1-1 in the 49th. Thirteen minutes later, LMU received a red card giving C-N a one-player advantage for the rest of the game. However, in the 67th minute, LMU stole a 2-1 lead.

Two minutes later, Gianeselli was fouled in the box and junior Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) capitalized on the penalty kick. In the second following the kick off, freshman center pack Helen Seed (England) made contact with a ball that was slotted into LMU's 6-yard box by Gianeselli for a 3-2 lead for C-N.

Another two minutes after Seed's goal, LMU found a way to tie the score back up at threes and send it into overtime.

With less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime period, LMU's Fernanda Miaci found her third goal of the match and the game-winner finalizing the score at 4-3.

Last Wednesday, Newberry defeated Anderson 1-0 with an early goal by Sabrina Serafin in the 11th minute. The Wolves outshot Anderson 16 to four and six to two in shots on goal.

The Eagles dropped last season's match against Newberry 1-0 in double overtime. Sarah Sager scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute.

C-N has not beaten the Wolves since 2010. 2012 graduate Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) put up two goals including the game-winner in the 49th minute, 2011 graduate Morgan Gruenenfielder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) scored the fourth goal in the 62nd minute, and Andrea Saevik (Norway) opened the scoring for C-N in the 18th for a 4-2 victory.
