Five NCAA Regional foes line 2022 softball schedule
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman will square off against five teams that made NCAA postseason play a year ago when it takes the field in 2022.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman will square off against five teams that made NCAA postseason play a year ago when it takes the field in 2022.
The Eagles will take on 67 percent of the field that made last year's Southeast Regional (Tusculum, Anderson, Lincoln Memorial and Emmanuel), as well as South Regional participant Mississippi College.
The schedule is tournament heavy for the month of February. The Eagles venture to Milledgeville, Ga.; Huntsville, Ala. and Due West, S.C. for three weekend events while hosting their own Eagle Invitational before settling into South Atlantic Conference play in March.
"Coach Toppel and I talked about scheduling," Carson-Newman head softball coach Michael Graves said. "We figured it would be a lot easier to pick up games and play consistently early against a lot of good teams by playing in tournaments than playing in doubleheaders."
Carson-Newman opens the year at the Georgia College Invitational in Milledgeville on Feb. 5. The Eagles open the year with Florida Tech, the host Bobcats and Emmanuel. The Eagles will be matching up with Florida Tech and Emmanuel for the first time in school history. The Eagles and Bobcats have played a highly competitive series all-time that is tied at 16 wins apiece. Carson-Newman has won two straight against Georgia College.
The Eagles open the doors to the Vicke Kazee-Hollifield Softball Complex on Feb. 9 with Lees-McRae. Carson-Newman has won 16 straight against the Bobcats, but narrowly kept that win streak intact with a pair of one-run wins last year.
Carson-Newman hits the road again the weekend of Feb. 11 for Huntsville to compete in the Alabama Huntsville's Charger Chillout across three days. There, the Eagles will also square off with some unfamiliar foes. C-N will play Mississippi College and Shorter for the first time ever while tangling with Southern Indiana for the first time since 1996 and Delta State for the first time since 2000. The Eagles wrap up the event with West Alabama and Miles.
"It's a unique challenge because we don't have familiarity," Graves said. "We'll have to be diligent with our scout so that we are prepared."
Feb. 18 brings Carson-Newman back to Mossy Creek where it will play host to King and West Virginia State in the Eagle Invitational.
"The most exciting thing with the turf is that we don't have to worry about weather or field maintenance," Graves said. "We can focus on coaching against two teams that should be pretty good. It should be a great weekend for softball between the three teams."
Carson-Newman wraps up the month at the Bearcat/Fleet Invite. The Eagles take on Concord and host Erskine on day one before shimmying to Greenwood to play Emmanuel and co-host Lander on day two.
The Eagles have non-conference home doubleheaders smattered throughout March and April with North Greenville (March 3), Frostburg State (March 13) and Lee (April 6).
Conference play starts on March 5 when Carson-Newman travels to Mars Hill to take on the Lions.
Four of Carson-Newman's first five league twinbills are on the road before C-N wraps up the year with three out of four league series at home. Senior day is set for April 23 against Lenoir-Rhyne.
