NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman senior utility player Macey Hughes (Corryton, Tenn.) has been named the Tennessee Sportswriters Association State Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon
Hughes hit .563 for the week, going 9-for-16 with five RBI, seven runs scored and three doubles.
The senior started the week with a 5-for-5 effort with four RBI against Milligan. Hughes matched four other Eagles with 5-for-5 days at the plate for the school record for hits in a game.
Hughes followed her two multi-hit efforts against Milligan with a double and an RBI against Lenoir-Rhyne.
Those numbers impacted her standing in the career and season record books. She drove in her 167th career run against the Bears to move into a tie for third with Sara Kelley on the all-time charts. Her three doubles through the week give her 55 for her career, also third all-time in school history. Finally, Hughes moved her season total for doubles to 19, also third all-time for a season in school history.
The Gibbs product is the third Eagle to win TSWA Player of the Week honors this season, joining Hayden Dye and Brooke Matyasovsky. This is Hughes second career weekly honor. She was named SAC Player of the Week as a sophomore.
Hughes and the rest of the Eagles will be on display Friday at 3:30 p.m. when they take on Newberry in the opening game of the SAC tournament. Coverage will be available on the Eagle Sports Network at cneagles.com/live.
