Lincoln Memorial Volleyball Downs Carson-Newman, 3-0, To Open South Atlantic Conference Play

Harrogate, Tenn. - The Lincoln Memorial University Volleyball team (8-2, 1-0 SAC) picked up its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season Tuesday night as it defeated visiting Carson-Newman College (6-5, 0-1 SAC) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-19), at Mars Gymnasium. The Lady Railsplitters have defeated the Lady Eagles three straight times dating back to November 14, 2008.

"Both teams serve received well tonight. It really came down to who made the least amount of errors. No one player stood out for either team but LMU did the little things that made the difference in the end," said Head Coach Shannon Mincey. "The crowd was very into the match and it was a good opportunity for our freshmen to experience a tough South Atlantic Conference playing environment."

In the first set, the two teams battled to a 19-19 tie before LMU went on to go up 1-0 in the match. Senior Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) had four kills in the stanza for C-N.

The Lady Railsplitters took a 2-0 set lead behind .325 (16-3-40) hitting in the second frame. Alison Hess (Dayton, Ohio) collected four kills on four attempts during the set.

LMU put the match away in the third behind six kills from Candace Richardson (Houston, Texas). With the score tied at 13, the Lady Railsplitters went on a 12-6 run to seal the victory.

Richardson led all players with 11 kills while Hess collected 10 of her own for LMU. Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, Ohio) and Brittany Pugh (Farmersburg, Ind.) dished-out 19 and 14 assists, respectively for the Lady Railsplitters while Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had a match-high 16 digs.

Carson-Newman was led by senior Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) as she led all players with 30 assists while Troyer recorded a team-high 10 kills. Freshmen Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Mackenzie Tyree (Daleville, Va.) recorded 13 and 11 digs, respectively for the Lady Eagles.

Carson-Newman will next take the court on Saturday at noon when Newberry College visits Holt Fieldhouse. First serve is set for noon.
