Wingate Volleyball Snaps Carson-Newman's Win Streak With A 3-1 Win Friday At Holt Fieldhouse

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Wingate University Volleyball Team (19-1, 7-0 SAC) remained perfect in South Atlantic Conference Play Friday evening as it defeated Carson-Newman College (11-6, 5-2 SAC) by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-16) score at Holt Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Bulldogs snapped the Lady Eagles' five-match win streak.

"We settled tonight," said Head Coach Shannon Mincey. "Our enthusiasm to score lessened as the match went on. Our setter opened up some one-on-one situations but our hitters didn't put away the ball."

C-N had its high point of the match early, as the Lady Eagles won the first set by a 25-23 score. Seven players tallied kills in the frame with a .344 (16-5-32) hitting percentage.

In the second set, Wingate put together four runs of more than three points each as the team cruised to a 25-18 victory. Jacki Emmenecker (Perrysburg, Ohio) recorded five kills in the stanza for the Bulldogs.

Wingate took a 2-1 lead in the match after hitting .243 (14-5-37) in the third set. The Bulldogs capitalized on a four-point run late in the stanza to go up 22-16, and held on for the victory.

The fourth set was all Bulldogs as Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) served the final six points of the frame to give Wingate its largest set win of the night.

"We haven't seen a team move the ball offensively as well as Wingate, so our defense found themselves stuck," continued Mincey.

Wingate had three players reach double figures in kills, led by Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) with 17. Lauren Billo (Orland Park, Ill.) and Emmenecker recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Willis tallied a double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs and led all players with four service aces.

Junior outside hitter Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) led the Lady Eagles offensively with 11 kills while senior setter Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs. Freshman libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) led all players with 19 digs.

"Our focus should be on Catawba tomorrow in an attempt to position ourselves as best we can for the conference tournament," concluded Mincey.

Carson-Newman will remain at home for its final match of the first half of the SAC Regular Season tomorrow as it hosts Catawba College at 11:30 a.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
