Carson-Newman Volleyball Splits A Pair Of Matches Friday At The Lees-McRae Carolina Challenge

Banner Elk, N.C. - The Carson-Newman College Volleyball Team (4-3) went 1-1 on day one of the Lees-McRae Carolina Challenge Friday at Williams Gymnasium as it defeated Mount Olive College (0-6), 3-0, and dropped the nightcap to Flagler College (3-4), 3-0.

Carson-Newman 3, Mount Olive 0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24)
Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) shared match-high honors with 10 kills, including kills on the final two points of the match to lead Carson-Newman to the victory over Mount Olive.

Carson-Newman built a 17-9 lead in the first set before Mount Olive pulled within a point at 20-19. The Lady Eagles ended the frame on back-to-back kills by Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Troyer to go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second stanza, C-N built a 20-14 lead on a run that was culminated by an ace by Troyer. Mount Olive rallied to within 22-19 but the Eagles won three of the final four points of the set to clinch the 2-0 advantage.

The Trojans took an early lead in the third set and led by as much as five before the Lady Eagles went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-19 lead. The two teams traded several side outs before Troyer put the match away with two straight kills for the victory.

Setters Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) had 15 assists apiece for Carson-Newman. Troyer led all players with four blocks while freshman libero Mackenzie Tyree (Daleville, Va.) tallied a match-high 15 digs.

Caitlin Skislak (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) led Mount Olive with 10 kills, while Joanie Werling (Purcelleville, Va.) finished with match-highs of 36 assists and four service aces.

Flagler 3, Carson-Newman 0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-22)
Flagler jumped out to a 12-1 lead over C-N in the first set of the match and cruised to the 15-point victory behind a .281 (13-4-32) to -.067 (4-6-30) hitting advantage.

The Lady Eagles battled back in the second and third sets forcing 12 ties and five lead changes over the final two frames of the match. C-N's hitting percentage improved significantly over the course of the match and the Lady Eagles out-hit the Saints in the final set (.267 to .212).

With Carson-Newman leading 10-5 in the second stanza, Flagler battled back to tie the set at 13. Neither team would lead by more than two points for the rest of the set as the Saints were able to pull out the win.

The third set was just as close as the second as the margin between C-N and Flagler only reached four points twice. Each team took advantage of scoring runs during the frame to gain the lead but the Lady Eagles were unable to force a fourth set.

Meg Weathersby (Maitland, Fla.) tallied a game-high 17 kills on a .560 (17-3-25) hitting effort. Setters Rebecca Royal (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) and Olivia Snipes (Easley, S.C.) dished out 19 and 16 assists, respectively in the match for the Saints while Katie Beale (Stuart, Fla.) recorded 13 digs.

Carson-Newman was led by Schachleiter and Troyer with eight kills each while Cutter logged 16 assists of her own.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they face the host Lady Bobcats of Lees-McRae College at 10:30 a.m. C-N will conclude the tournament with a match at 3:30 p.m., when it faces the University of West Alabama.
