Carson-Newman Volleyball Defeats Newberry, 3-0, Saturday In South Atlantic Conference Action

Newberry, S.C. – The Carson-Newman College Volleyball Team (13-7, 7-3 SAC) jumped on Newberry College (15-11, 5-6 SAC) early and didn’t look back as the Lady Eagles prevailed by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) score Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena in South Atlantic Conference action.

C-N was victorious in the first set behind two five-point serving runs by freshmen Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) and MacKenzie Tyree (Daleville, Va.) as the Lady Eagles hit .333 (13-2-33) for the frame.

Carson-Newman put together two more long serving runs in the second set and took a 24-17 lead. Newberry scored four straight points before a kill by junior Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) put the stanza away for the Lady Eagles.

Newberry played C-N closer in the third and final frame than it had the entire match. Senior Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Lady Eagles with five kills in the set while the team tallied four blocks en route to the victory.

Schachleiter led C-N offensively as she tallied a match-high 11 kills in an errorless performance (11-0-24) and added 18 digs to complete the double-double to go along with four blocks as well. Senior Katie Troyer (Plain City, Ohio) and junior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) each recorded 10 kills.

Senior Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) dished out 21 assists and added 11 digs to rack up a double-double of her own while McDonald finished with 14 assists as well. Hayes led all players with 21 digs.

Newberry was led by Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) with 10 kills and 16 digs while Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) had a match-high 23 assists.

Carson-Newman will stay on the road Tuesday when it travels to Greeneville, Tenn., to face the Pioneers of Tusculum College. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
