The Lady Eagles defeated Glenville State College, 3-0, in their afternoon outing and outlasted a strong Francis Marion University squad, 3-1, in the nightcap.

"I can't be more pleased with the complete team effort that we exemplified today," said Head Coach Shannon Mincey. "The spirit was very intense both on the court and on the bench."

The Patriots of Francis Marion jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap of day one of the tournament but Carson-Newman would not go quietly. The Lady Eagles won the next three sets, and took the match with a victory in a closely-contested fourth set (26-24).

With the score tied at 24 in the fourth frame, back-to-back kills by sophomore right side hitter Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) and senior outside hitter Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio) sealed the victory for the home team.

Troyer led the team with 12 kills for the second time in as many matches while Cutter tallied 35 assists in leading the Lady Eagles to the victory. Schachleiter and freshman libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) each racked up 16 digs in the match for C-N.

Francis Marion was led offensively by Ashlee Crook (Parker, Colo.) with nine kills while Amanda Mitchell (Farragut, Tenn.) pitched in seven scores of her own.

"Although there were only six players on the court, the rest of the team made a huge impact by cheering and looking for open shots from the bench," added Mincey. "Hats off to Jessica Brady and Carly Mozgai for helping us with the win from the bench, although I hope they will return to the court soon. We will continue to work on our system as we are still learning how to compete as a unit."

Carson-Newman will face Texas A&M-Kingsville at 10:00 a.m., Saturday and will conclude the Chick-fil-A Invitational with a contest against the University of Charleston (W.Va.) at 2:00 p.m.
