Carson-Newman Volleyball Routs Queens, 3-0, Friday Afternoon At Holt Fieldhouse

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman College Volleyball Team (15-7) posted their best hitting percentage of the year (.493) Friday afternoon as it blew past Queens (N.C.) University by a 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-13) score at Holt Fieldhouse.

The Lady Eagles soared to a 1-0 set lead behind ten and eight point serving runs by seniors Stephanie Cutter (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Jessica Schachleiter (Cincinnati, Ohio), respectively. Junior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) recorded 6 of her match-high 12 kills in the first frame, hitting .545 (6-0-11) for the set.

Carson-Newman kept the gas to the floor as it raced to a 6-0 lead in the second set. Queens pulled within four points at 9-5, but that was as close as the Royals would get. C-N stretched its lead to eight points and kept that margin for the last half of the set as five Lady Eagles tallied at least two kills in the period.

Scoring runs marked the majority of the third and final set as the Lady Eagles registered three or more straight scores on five different occasions. C-N hit nearly errorlessly as a team in the third stanza, posting a .560 hitting percentage (16-2-25) to close out the contest.

Mozgai led all players with 12 kills on 19 attempts with one error (.579) and added two blocks as well for the Lady Eagles.

Cutter tallied a match-high 27 kills to go along with six digs and five kills, respectively for C-N.

Erinn Moore (Longwood, Fla.) had 12 assists and four kills to lead Queens and Sarah Malpass (Gainesville, Fla.) chipped in a team-high five digs.

Carson-Newman will return to South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday when it travels to Mars Hill College to take on the Lions at 7:00 p.m.
