Lady Eagles Finish Exhibition Play at No. 4 Tennessee

Carson-Newman Game Notes - Tennessee

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles women's basketball team will finish the exhibition portion of their schedule by facing the fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers at Thompson-Boling Arena In Knoxville, Tenn., on Monday night at 7 p.m.

This is the tenth straight season that the Lady Eagles and Lady Vols have met, with Tennessee winning all meetings in exhibition play.

"Tennessee has a fine basketball team," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "Playing at North Carolina (last Wednesday) was an intimidating environment, but Thompson-Boling Arena is a whole different ballgame. That's because it is Tennessee and it's in-state and there are around 11,000 people there."

The Lady Eagles fell to the no. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels 111-50 in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the first exhibition game of the season on Wednesday night. Sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) led all Carson-Newman scorers with eight points in her first game as a Lady Eagle.

Carson-Newman was picked to finish fifth in the 2013-14 South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches' poll, and sophomore guard Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) was named to the Preseason All-SAC Second Team.

The Lady Volunteers enter the season ranked no. 4 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls, announced last week. Tennessee, led by second-year and reigning Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year Holly Warlick, went 27-8 last season with a 14-2 mark in conference play en route to a regular season SEC championship.

Last season Tennessee defeated Carson-Newman 104-44 at Thompson-Boling Arena on Nov. 1, 2012. Now-senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.), led all Carson-Newman scorers with 12 points, and she was joined in double figures by now-junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.).

The 104-44 win for the Lady Vols marked the eighth time that Tennessee crossed the 100-point plateau in the exhibition series dating back to 2004. Tennessee was led in scoring by Meighan Simmons with her 24 points, and Bashaara Graves picked up a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

The overall series between the schools goes back to Feb. 26, 1920, a game that Carson-Newman won 14-13. Carson-Newman's last win against Tennessee came on Feb. 9, 1925, a 36-16 win in Jefferson City.

Fans can listen to Monday's game from Knoxville on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and the broadcast is also available online at www.cneagles.com.
