Carson-Newman Game Notes - Queens Road

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (9-4, 6-1 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will look to stay atop the SAC standings by facing the Queens Royals (4-7, 3-4 South Atlantic Conference) at the Levine Center in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Carson-Newman leads the SAC standings with a 6-1 record in conference play. There is a three-way tie for second place, with Wingate, Catawba, and Coker all at 5-2.

"It's always a challenge when you go on the road in this conference," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "Queens is a good team that is very dangerous and has one of the league's leading scorers in Shonice Pettaway and has unseated us as the top 3-point shooter in the league."

Carson-Newman is coming off an 85-67 win over Mars Hill on Wednesday. Freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman with her career-high 15 points. She was joined in double-digit scoring by junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) with her 12 points along with freshman Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) and sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) with both players adding 10 points for the Lady Eagles.

Carson-Newman never trailed in the game, as the Lady Eagles swept Mars Hill for the season after C-N beat the Lions 62-57 on Nov. 26.

The Royals, coached by Susan Yow, are 4-7 this season with a 3-4 mark in conference play. The Royals are led in scoring by forward Shonice Pettaway, who is averaging 17.2 points per game, the third-best scoring average by any player in the South Atlantic Conference.  She also leads the SAC by hitting 43.8 percent of her 3-point shots.

Queens is coming off a 65-58 loss at Coker this past Saturday, with Pettaway leading three players in double-digit scoring with her 18 points. Queens, in only its first year in the SAC, was picked to finish 10th out of 12 teams in the preseason SAC coaches poll.

Saturday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio is also available on www.cneagles.com.
