Lady Eagles Outlast Lions 62-57

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (5-1, 3-0 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball once again won a conference game with a road comeback, defeating the Mars Hill Lions (1-4, 0-3 South Atlantic Conference) by a score of 62-57 at Stanford Arena on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Eagles, who trailed by a point at halftime, outscored Mars Hill 34-28 in the second half to secure its fourth straight win, as Carson-Newman is off to a 3-0 start in conference play for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

"We always struggle at Mars Hill for some reason," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "Just disappointed with our performance, am I happy we got the win? Absolutely, and I'm proud that the kids fought through with some adverse circumstances that took place."

Sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman with her 20 points, as she led Carson-Newman from behind the arc with four 3-pointers and eight field goals.

Burstrom was joined in double figures by senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) and sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), with both players scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds for the Lady Eagles.

Carson-Newman held the upper hand for most of the first half, and with 10:55 left to play led 20-11 over Mars Hill. The Lady Eagles shot cold for the rest of the half as the Lions closed the first 20 minutes on an 18-8 run to lead at halftime 29-28.

The Lady Eagles battled adversity in the second half, with both freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) and Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) fouling out with just over five minutes left in the game. Carson-Newman was also without the services of junior Whitney Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.), who left the game midway through the second half with an undisclosed injury.

Markus helped lead the way for the Lady Eagles in the second half, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the final 20 minutes as Carson-Newman held the lead for the final four minutes.

The Lions made a late charge thanks to two late 3-pointers by Greeneville, Tenn., native Ansley Ricker, who finished with 13 points, all of which came in the second half.

The Lady Eagles made necessary foul shots in the final minute to escape with the five-point win.

Carson-Newman will not play over the Thanksgiving holiday, and the Lady Eagles will next play on Tuesday Dec. 3, stepping out-of-conference against Lee at Holt Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.

Tuesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio also available on www.cneagles.com.
