Lady Eagles End Losing Streak with 73-62 Win at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (13-11, 10-8 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team ended its six-game losing streak by defeating the Brevard Tornados (7-15, 6-12 South Atlantic Conference) by a score of 73-62 at Boshamer Gymnasium on Monday evening.

With the win, Carson-Newman earned a season-sweep of Brevard for the third straight season under the direction of head coach Mike Mincey.

"I felt like because of what happened Saturday with the loss we had a real fire to come over here and try to get a win, and we were just in the right mindset to come in here and get a win," said Mincey. "We had a little bit of a size advantage tonight, so we felt like with that advantage we were going to throw the ball down low and we did."

Carson-Newman was once again led in scoring by freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) as she scored 16 points for the second consecutive game. She was joined in double figures by the 13 points of junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) and the 12 points from junior Jasmine Franklin (Lexington, Ky.).

The Lady Eagles took quick control of the game, opening the contest on a 13-4 run. Brevard would twice make runs to cut the Carson-Newman lead to two points, but each Brevard run was answered by baskets from the Lady Eagles, many of them around the basket.

Brevard would finish the first half strong on a 9-3 run. The run saw the Tornados grab what would turn out to be its only lead of the game when Kadijah Watts hit a driving layup to put Brevard up 37-35 with 32 seconds left in the half. Carson-Newman answered with a 3-pointer from freshman Katie Stubblefield (Alcoa, Tenn.), and her third made trey of the season gave Carson-Newman a 38-37 lead at halftime.

The Lady Eagles also took quick control of the second half. Carson-Newman scored the first eight points coming out of the locker room, with the first six of those points from Cupples. Overall she would score eight of Carson-Newman's 10 points during a 10-3 run to begin the second half.

Brevard charged back to cut Carson-Newman's lead to 48-45 with 15:05 left in the game. Carson-Newman answered back with a 16-5 run over the next seven minutes to lead 64-50 with 8:35 to go.

The Lady Eagles maintained their large lead for the rest of the game, with the Tornados never getting closer than to within eight points of Carson-Newman.

For the second time this season, Carson-Newman shot better than 50 percent from the field, going 29-for-57 from the field, including an 6-for-16 mark from 3-point land, and the Lady Eagles hit all nine of their free throws.

Carson-Newman also overcame some foul difficulties in the game, as the Lady Eagles committed 17 fouls in the first half compared to Brevard's seven. For the game, Carson-Newman committed 29 fouls with Brevard only guilty of 11 fouls.

Brevard was led in scoring by the 14 points of Madison Lenox, and the 13 points of Chelsea Turner, who hit four 3-pointers in the first half.

Carson-Newman will finish its three-games in a five-day stretch on Wednesday night by hosting Anderson at Holt Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. Earlier this season Carson-Newman lost in Anderson to the Trojans 72-51 on Jan. 29.

Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live video is also available on www.cneagles.com.
